This new skyscraper boasts a bevy of impressive features, including an environmentally friendly sewage recycling system. The Salesforce Tower is constructing a blackwater recycling system that is due to be complete by the end of this year.
Blackwater refers to waste from dishwashers, garbage disposals and toilets, which are more difficult to render reusable compared to water from sinks, showers and washing machines (also referred to as graywater).
Based in San Francisco, the high-rise building was built by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects with sustainability in mind. The Public Utilities Commission grant-funded sewage recycling system will treat the building's wastewater (including runoff from rooftops) and reuse it for plant irrigation and clean toilet water.
This is an problem-solving example of how cities can use recycled water.
