Air Quality-Monitoring Sculptures

These Fabricated Objects Help to Measure Atmospheric Conditions

Stian Korntved Ruud and Jørgen Platou Willumsen designed a set of decorative sculptures that help to measure atmospheric conditions. While there are many high-tech devices that track urban air quality, these units are often bulky and uninspiring. In contrast, Ruud and Willumsen developed a set of air quality readers that blur the lines between style and functionality.

The sculptures are referred to as 'Kneip' and they are located in Oslo, Norway. The devices harness elements of the natural world to help them blend into their surroundings. As the designers explain, "we thought it would be interesting to make sculptures that explore the forces of nature in a direct and indirect way." Beyond the elegant design, the sculptures are also highly functional. The devices help to measure atmospheric conditions such as humidity and wind. The devices are even capable of detecting seismic activity.

Kneip demonstrates that man-made structures do not have to disrupt the beauty of our natural environment.
