The Ekocycle 3D printer Repurposes PET Plastic

Soda giant Coca-Cola and Will.i.am, the new chief creative director at 3D systems, have teamed up to created the Ekocycle 3D printer.

The machine, which is in the cola brand's signature red and white, prints designs using filament cartridges in colors made from recycled PET plastic. The Black Eyed Peas frontman explains, "As humans we create hundreds of millions of tonnes of waste every year. A lot of it is cheap PET plastic."

The fact that the machine prints in post-consumer plastic means that a water bottle can manufacture things as diverse as bracelets, robots or vases. In fact, single cartridge contains as much as 25% recycled materials, which calculates into roughly three 568-millileter PET plastic bottles.
