Carlo Ratti's Dynamic Bridge is Made Up of Circling Autonomous Boats

"A tricky patch of Amsterdam's waterway," has been tackled with the implementation of a dynamic network of autonomous boats. The project was headed by Carlo Ratti and his team at MIT — the Senseable City Lab. Considered to contribute to the balanced "intersection of technology and urbanism," the development goes by the name of 'roundAround bridge.'

The autonomous boats are in perpetual circular motion. The 'Roboats' make use of special algorithms, lasers, and cameras, to determine direction and behavior, ensuring that "the best path around obstacles" is aptly calculated. Each waterborne vehicle can charge on each side of the canal.

The autonomous boats give another option for individuals to go from Amsterdam's city center to the Marineterrein Amsterdam which is a new development. The alternative is considered to be "low commitment."
