U.S. City Converts to LED Streetlights

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Ann Arbor, Michigan will be the first U.S. city to convert its downtown streetlights to all LED lights. The city will start installing LED streetlighting in February 2008. The city says that it will get a 3.8 year payback from the initial investment and then save money for the long life of the bulbs, which require less energy and last longer.

Last year, Ann Arbor spent 25 percent of its energy budget on traffic signals and street lamps; however, the LEDs will save the city almost $50,000 per year.

Implications - To cut already-thin budgets even further, cities are increasingly adopting eco-friendly fixtures and lighting solutions that promise to save energy and cut costs.
