749 Cloverdale is Layered to Protect Residents from the Sun

Los Angeles-based architecture and design firm Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) has recently constructed 749 Cloverdale, a six-unit residential building located in Los Angeles, California. The facade of the building features a structured recycled skin made of steel and is framed by plastered cement.

As beautifully linear as the building may look, it is also fully functional. In dealing with the problem of California’s tendency to experience intense heat waves during the summer, the facade is made of a permeable outer skin that allows for effective circulation for the building while protecting residents from the heat of the sun.

The skin of the exterior serves as a facilitator for enhancing the relationship between the private space of the home and the public space. One of the jurors David Jameson says, "The building becomes a veil, where it allows itself—like an instrument—to tune to a very dense, private component over the bedrooms and bathrooms. Then it starts to become more open as you get into the living areas."
