About 500 hours and a 17-year-old's determined mind. A young New Jersey hacker claims he's figured out how to unlock some of the restrictions on Apple's iPhone, including finding a way to use the device overseas. The young genius was able to get the mobile to work on [T-Mobile's](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experience-more-and-experience-beyond) network, freeing it from its prior AT&T exclusivity restrictions. George Hotz spent about 8 days fiddling with the Apple gadget before he was able to make a call through T-Mobile -- and that was his only goal. "It wasn't to be rich," the SF Gate quoted him. He's not hiding the info either; in fact, he uploaded a how-to guide on his [blog](http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com). "Another group, known as iPhoneSimFree.com, said on its site that it also had found a way to get around Apple's locks and connect to T-Mobile. It offered proof to [Engadget](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/project-cyberdeck), a popular technology blog, which published a video demonstration, and said it plans to sell the software. In general, scores of hackers have been working on a way to make the iPhone compatible with other services since the phone debuted." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.2/10 - Popularity: 68% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Mobile](https://www.trendhunter.com/mobile) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Unlocking Mobile Restrictions:** Discovering ways to unlock restrictions on mobile devices create opportunities for innovative and disruptive solutions in the mobile technology industry. - **Hacking Mobile Networks:** Hacking mobile networks to enable devices to work with different service providers opens up possibilities for disruptive innovations in the telecommunications industry. - **Breaking Exclusivity Contracts:** Finding ways to break exclusivity contracts between mobile devices and service providers presents disruptive innovation opportunities in the mobile technology market. ### Where This Applies - **Mobile Technology:** The mobile technology industry can explore disruptive innovations in unlocking mobile restrictions and breaking exclusivity contracts to enhance user freedom and open up new market opportunities. - **Telecommunications:** The telecommunications industry can capitalize on the hacking of mobile networks to enable devices to work with different service providers, stimulating competition and driving disruptive innovations. - **Software Development:** The software development industry has the potential to create innovative solutions for unlocking mobile restrictions and breaking exclusivity contracts, providing users with more choices and disrupting the market. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Low-Tech Smartphone Interface Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blank-spaces-app.md) - [Repairable Mobile Phones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repairable-iphone-backplate.md) - [Usage-Curbing Smartphone Locks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smartphone-lock.md) - [Teen-Targeted Smartphone Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hmd-x1.md) - [Tap-to-Pay Smartphone Services](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apple-tap-to-pay.md) - [Security-Enhancing Phone Cases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cirotta-case.md) - [Extreme Smartphone Security Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lockdown-mode.md) - [Hardware-Verifying Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hardware-verifying.md) - [Smartphone Cellular Emergency Features](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iphone-14-emergency-sos.md)
