# Magical Preteen Pixie Paintings Yosuke Ueno Illustrates Young Subjects in Surreal Scenes By Jason Soy | Published 2012-04-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yosuke-ueno References: [juxtapoz](http://www.juxtapoz.com/Current/in-la-yosuke-ueno-thinkspace-gallery) & [spaceegg77](http://www.spaceegg77.com/) Many of these [Yosuke Ueno illustrations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japonisme-1) feature young pixie-like subjects in extraordinarily [surreal scenes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neojomon-biomorphic-fantme), but perhaps these bizarre images will seem less strange when viewers get more context. Largely impacted by the 3/11 tsunami that hit Japan, Ueno used his latest offerings to explore feelings he has about his native country’s recovery. It isn’t odd then that these paintings heavily feature children as Japan can currently be equated with a kid – vulnerable, but with great potential for growth and wonderful things. Though Yosuke Ueno remains stylistically consistent, it’s remarkable the amount of concepts he imagines and then renders. From one-eyed samurai figures completely covered in plating to forest creatures composed of fruits and vegetation, Ueno’s art is ambitious and takes viewers on a magical visual journey. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.0/10 - Popularity: 47% | Activity: 5% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Surreal Illustrations:** The trend of surreal illustrations in art allows for imaginative and thought-provoking storytelling. - **Exploring Emotions Through Art:** Artists like Yosuke Ueno are leveraging their work to express personal and societal emotions, creating an opportunity for empathetic connection. - **Youthful Themes in Art:** The use of children and youthful subjects in art provides a unique perspective on vulnerability, growth, and potential. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Design:** Artists in the art and design industry can leverage surreal illustrations to create visually captivating and thought-provoking works. - **Art Therapy:** The exploration of emotions through art can be applied in art therapy settings to facilitate emotional healing and self-expression. - **Children's Entertainment:** The use of youthful themes in art can inspire imaginative and engaging content for children's entertainment, providing unique and memorable experiences. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Destructive Nature Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/keita-miyazaki.md) - [Whimsical Spirit Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [Manga-Style Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hisashi-eguchi.md) - [Bi-Culture-Inspired Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bicultureinspired-art-exhibition.md) - [Vibrant Artistic Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japonisme-1.md) - [Young Artist-Supporting Illustration Contests](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/student-illustration-contest.md) - [Imaginative Pared-Back Art Supplies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woset.md) - [Raunchy Anime-Inspired Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manuela-soto-sosa.md)
