# Roped Backrest Seating The YC1 Chair by Mikiya Kobayashi Boasts Striking Details By Meghan Young | Published 2015-06-12 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yc1-chair References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/modern-chair-handcrafted-tokyo-japan/) & [mikiyakobayashi](http://www.mikiyakobayashi.com/en/furniture/yc1/) The YC1 Chair might have a basic silhouette, yet it is far from underwhelming. Instead, the use of a conventional frame simply allows the more unique features to stand out all the more. Namely, the backrest. The YC1 Chair is finished with "simple white rope is threaded through holes in the chair and run through a leather, tube-like detail which helps to cradle the back while creating a beautiful and unexpected seat back," writes Design Milk. Designed by Tokyo-based Mikiya Kobayashi for Takumi Kohgei, the YC1 Chair is part of the larger Yamanami collection. It brings a subtle serenity to the space its placed in, which is only natural considering people will look to it for relaxation. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 38% | Activity: 19% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Backrest Seating:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new materials and techniques to create ergonomic and visually striking backrest designs for seating. - **Unique Features:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Experiment with unconventional elements and details to create visually impactful and unexpected design elements in furniture. - **Serenity in Furniture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate elements of tranquility and relaxation into furniture designs to enhance the overall calming experience. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrate innovative materials, such as ropes, and unique design elements to create aesthetically pleasing and functional furniture pieces. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Embrace unconventional design techniques and curated elements to create spaces with visual impact and serenity. - **Artisan Craftsmanship:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Collaborate with skilled artisans to combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design concepts for unique and elevated furniture pieces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Elegant Wooden Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miko-armchair.md) - [Uniquely Structured Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yay-chair.md) - [Soothing Boat-Like Lounge Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canoa-chair.md) - [Ultra-Precise Woven Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woven-chair-design.md) - [Rope-Like Dynamic Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caterpillar-lounge.md) - [Distinctive Craftsmanship Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/koyori-wooden-chairs.md) - [Zen-Focused Furniture Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/goyo-chair.md) - [Fabric-Wrapped Rocking Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zhe-rocking-chair.md) - [Floating Component Dining Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-top-chair.md)
