# Gnarly Gnome Illustrations 'Yard Keeper' by Andry Tatarko is Psychedelic and Eccentric By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-05-10 | Pop Culture Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yard-keeper References: [characterdesignserved](http://www.characterdesignserved.com/gallery/Yard-keeper-/550022) & [freelancejob.ru](http://www.freelancejob.ru/users/tav/) St. Petersburg, Russia-based illustrator Andry Tatarko recently drew up a few illustrations of what appears to be a cross between some 19th century Cossack and a garden gnome, titled, 'Yard Keeper.' The illustrations are quite [psychedelic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/new-psychedelia) as the figures depicted are themselves created from smaller figures. This [self-referential, fractal-like effect](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alien-vases) envelopes the viewer, drawing them closer to characters and scenes Tatarko depicts; however, the two-tone black and beige color scheme as well as the general tone of the illustrations prevent them from achieving a truly [whimsical feel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima). In one drawing, a bearded man reminiscent of a Cossack warrior runs across the frame holding a knife staring blankly at the viewer, leaving much to the imagination. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.5/10 - Popularity: 24% | Activity: 14% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Pop Culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/popculture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Psychedelic Illustrations:** Explore the use of vibrant colors and intricate patterns in illustrations to create a psychedelic visual experience. - **Self-referential Art:** Discover how artists incorporate fractal-like effects and smaller figures within their work to create a self-referential narrative. - **Eccentric Character Design:** Uncover new approaches to character design that combine elements from different time periods and cultures to create unique and intriguing characters. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** Explore disruptive innovation opportunities in the art and design industry to create visually stunning and conceptually rich artworks. - **Publishing and Media:** Unlock new possibilities in publishing and media by incorporating psychedelic illustrations and eccentric character designs in books, magazines, and digital platforms. - **Fashion and Apparel:** Discover disruptive innovation opportunities in fashion and apparel by incorporating psychedelic patterns and eccentric character designs in clothing and accessories. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Boxy Botanical Outerwear](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-jacket.md) - [Surreal Kyiv Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/apartment-with-a-lizard.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Digital Archetype Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/christian-rex-van-minnen-1.md) - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Playful Doodle-Emblazoned Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sam-cox.md) - [Lush Garden-Focused Melbourne Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gardeners-house-1.md) - [Whimsical Vibrantly Decorated Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/daria-vasilkova.md) - [Surreal Love-Themed Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/joakim-ojanen.md)
