# Romantic Skeletal X-rays These X-ray Portraits of Couples Show a Deep Level of Intimacy By Mesel Isaac | Published 2013-11-26 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xray-portraits References: [spoon-tamago](http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2013/11/26/x-ray-portraits-of-couples-by-ayako-kanda-and-mayuka-hayashi/) & [m-kagaku.co.jp](http://www.m-kagaku.co.jp/mcjda/award2013/awd01_det04.html) These stunning x-ray portraits are by Japanese photographers Ayako Kanda and Mayuka Hayashi. Kanda and Hayashi captured these eerie x-ray portraits using an actual Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and x-ray machines, as well as the aid of four couples. The Japanese photographers submitted these x-ray photos for their [senior thesis exhibition](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/out-of-orifice) at [Musashino Art University](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wara-art-festival) and wanted to show more than "the finite nature of our bodies." It's easy at first glance to be repulsed by the x-ray images since x-rays by themselves are associated with hospitals and therefore illness. But if one allows themselves to move beyond their first impressions, they might see that these x-ray portraits reveal a truly unique and deep level of intimacy that would not otherwise be revealed if the photos were of the tradition flesh form. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.8/10 - Popularity: 98% | Activity: 99% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Skeletal X-ray Portraiture:** Opportunity for artists and photographers to explore the juxtaposition of intimacy and vulnerability through the use of skeletal x-ray images. - **Reimagining Body and Identity:** Innovative approach to portraying the human body beyond traditional representations, opening up possibilities for self-expression and challenging societal norms. - **Exploring Hidden Depths:** Unveiling the unseen by incorporating x-ray technology into creative mediums, offering a new perspective on human relationships and connections. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Fine Art:** Artists and galleries can embrace this unconventional technique to create unique and thought-provoking artworks that challenge conventional definitions of beauty and aesthetics. - **Photography:** Photographers can explore the use of x-ray technology as a tool for capturing intimate moments and emotions, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. - **Medical Imaging:** Advancements in medical imaging technology can be inspired by the creative application of x-ray portraiture, leading to enhanced diagnostic methods and patient care. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [QSR X-Ray Campaigns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kfc-spain-1.md) - [Romantic AI Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/true-love-portrait.md) - [Raunchy Anime-Inspired Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manuela-soto-sosa.md) - [X-Ray Vision Headsets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xar.md) - [Portable Medical Imaging Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drx-rise.md) - [Robotic Portrait Sketches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pankraz-piktograph.md) - [Next-Generation Diagnostic Imaging Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diagnostic-imaging-system.md) - [Mobile X-Ray Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mobile-xray-unit.md) - [Magnetic Couples Socks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/magnetic-couples-socks.md)
