The property owner, an author and illustrator, asked the London-based architecture company to make him a [backyard working space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/love-shack-1) for his Hackney home. Inspired by a love for [children's literature](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/western-academy) and mythology, the writer's shed is described as a "fairytale hut at the bottom of the garden where the client can retreat and immerse himself in his work." The structure has a cedar exterior with a shingle roof, chimney and log storage area. The space has floods of natural light thanks to a north-facing skylight. It also has a large sliding door. A book case surrounds the wood-burning stove, which also allows the writer to show off his favorite titles. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.7/10 - Popularity: 82% | Activity: 50% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Backyard Working Spaces:** Opportunity for architect firms to design functional and aesthetically pleasing working spaces in residential gardens. - **Inspired by Literature:** Furniture and decor companies can create products that evoke the charm and whimsy of beloved books and fairytales. - **Natural Light Design:** Architects and designers can explore innovative ways to maximize natural light in small spaces. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architecture firms to create custom backyard working spaces like the writer's shed designed by Surman Weston. - **Furniture and Decor:** Opportunity to design and market furniture and decor inspired by literature and fairytales. - **Lighting:** Lighting companies can develop innovative solutions to maximize natural light in small spaces, like the writer's shed with its skylight. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dual-Workspace Backyard Sheds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/workshed.md) - [Treehouse Writing Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casetta-tessino.md) - [Weatherized Visual Wooden Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hundred-acre-wood.md) - [Book-Inspired Timber-Lined Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hat-house.md) - [Modular Wooden Shed Offices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/schtauss.md) - [Educational Storage Shed Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/big-roof.md) - [Sleek Timber-Constructed Sheds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-nightlight.md) - [Converted Hybrid Studio Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cowshed.md) - [Earthy Tonal Tiled Sheds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studio-shed-1.md)
