The sanctuary was initially proposed by the EU after the Unites States continued to open these areas of the Weddell Sea and around the Antarctic Peninsula for drilling and fishing. The proposal was later backed by Greenpeace and is set to go to conference this October. If accepted, the reserve would protect killer and blue whales, seals, penguins and other forms underwater life.
