# Repurposed Norwegian Dormitories Snohetta Revived a Wooden Boathouse for Summer Camp By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-09-02 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-boathouse References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/09/01/hudoy-boathouse-snohetta-summer-camp-norway/) & [snohetta](http://snohetta.com/) Architecture studio Snøhetta recovered an old wooden boathouse, located on the Norwegian island of Hudoy, fashioning it into a dormitory for visiting campers. The team saved the house from being torn down, deciding that they'd rather work with the existing structure than design a brand-new building. All that was left at the time of their intervention was the original framework and doors. The renovated space will function as both a social area and sleeping quarters. In order to accommodate both objectives, the architects installed a louvred facade that ensures the interior is filled with natural light. The exterior is coated with corrugated polycarbonate sheets, which waterproof the cabin, and wooden boards that ensure privacy for the inhabitants. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.4/10 - Popularity: 21% | Activity: 14% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Sustainable Architecture:** Repurposing existing structures is a trend in sustainable architecture with opportunities for innovative use of materials and design. - **Adaptive Reuse:** Adaptive reuse of buildings like this wooden boathouse is a growing trend that offers opportunities for creativity, cost savings, and preservation. - **Multi-functional Spaces:** Designing multi-functional spaces that serve as both social areas and sleeping quarters is a trend in interior design with opportunities for maximizing limited space and resources. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** The architecture industry can employ innovative approaches to sustainable and adaptive reuse of existing structures like the wooden boathouse. - **Hospitality:** The hospitality industry can benefit from multi-functional spaces like the repurposed boathouse, allowing them to cater to different needs and preferences of guests. - **Real Estate:** The real estate industry can tap into the trend of adaptive reuse to create unique, sustainable, and cost-effective properties that cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly accommodation. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Reindeer Herding School Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oarvemtta-education-hub.md) - [Suspended Off-Grid Treetop Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-dokka.md) - [Boat-Inspired Community Center](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/esbjerg-maritime-center.md) - [Lakeside Lab Hub Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/boathouse-zuka.md) - [Angular Educational Facilities](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oarvemtta.md) - [Arctic Floating Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-vipp-guesthouse.md) - [Coastal Bright Red Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/handegrd-arkitektur.md) - [Cliff Edge Wooden Cabins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bolder-star-lodges.md) - [Sustainable Norwegian Timber Schools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oarvemtta-school.md)
