# Abstract Expressionist Architecture Wintergarden Shopping Center Facade Resembles a Pollock Piece By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-07-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wintergarden-shopping-center References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2012/07/13/wintergarden-facade-by-studio-505/) & [studio505.au](http://www.studio505.com.au/) What might at first appear to be an urban scale abstract piece of artwork is one of three new facades of the Wintergarden Shopping Center in Brisbane, Australia. What you will discover on approach, however, is that the busily assembled exterior is not merely a mess of colorful lines. A closer look and a sharply angled perspective from immediately beneath the building will expose the presence of several [magnified butterflies](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flowers-and-butterflies-are-dancing) with their delicate open wings spread away from the flat featured walls. Their own details and decorations make them blend in with the textural intricacy and chaotic polychromatism of the line-layered murals so that they're invisible when viewed from a distance. The [Studio 505 Wintergarden Shopping Center](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/zibo-oct) looks unlike any other building in the city, inviting intrigue and asserting an importance so to encourage the public to come inside. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.0/10 - Popularity: 75% | Activity: 38% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Abstract Expressionist Architecture:** The use of abstract and chaotic designs in architecture can create unique and visually captivating buildings. - **Invisible Details in Architecture:** Incorporating hidden designs and details in building facades can add an element of surprise and intrigue for viewers. - **Magnified Nature in Architecture:** Incorporating magnified images of nature, such as the butterfly wings in the Wintergarden Shopping Center, can add beauty and interest to architectural design. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Architects can use abstract expressionist techniques and magnified images of nature to create unique and visually striking building designs. - **Retail:** Integrating unique and visually captivating building designs can attract customers and encourage foot traffic in retail spaces. - **Art:** The use of abstract expressionist architecture can blur the lines between art and functional design. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Facade Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fractal-facade-house.md) - [Glass Facade Shopping Centers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harajuku-quest.md) - [Blooming Clustered Art Forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/structural-botany.md) - [Optical Illusion Replica Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/liberty-science-center.md) - [Office Building Rainbow Facades](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vertical-rainbow-office.md) - [Ultra-Colorful High-Density Residential Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/highdensity-residential-design.md) - [Nature-Inspired Artful Garden Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/henderson-art-garden.md) - [Campus Art Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-ppw.md) - [Futuristic Commerce Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/deji-plaza-phase-ii.md)
