Researchers at the [National Science Foundation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ai-smart-bandages) Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) at [North Carolina State University](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/electronic-patch) are developing a system that combines sensors and software to help analyze wheezes in order to better understand respiratory health.

The system includes body heat-powered sensors that are worn by the patient during their daily routine. The second component of the system is software that monitors those sensors. When wheezing sounds are detected, a custom algorithm is used to assess the time, pitch and volume of wheezing sounds.

The wheeze-detecting software will eventually be integrated into a smartphone app which will communicate wirelessly with the sensors. This allows for detected problems to be noted and shared with both doctor and patient, allowing for effective and timely treatment.
