# Picnic-Improving Contraptions W.E.T. Beacon Improves Park Atmospheres by Harnessing Sun and Rain By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-10-10 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wet References: [yankodesign](http://www.yankodesign.com/2013/10/09/berlins-water-enhanced-tempelhof/) & [coroflot](http://www.coroflot.com/haiden1991/WET) The W.E.T. system is many things, but you'd likely not be able to name most of them at first glance. Most obviously, perhaps, is its function as an [umbrella or a parasol](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-grid), protecting people in the park from sun and rain. The Water Enhanced Tempelhof was designed specifically in response to a challenge to improve the grilling experience in Berlin's Tempelhof Park so that the public can enjoy al fresco eating in all sorts of weather. The domed top of the device catches rain and stores it in a tank beneath the ground. This H2O can then be used to supplement the garden's irrigation and to offer a [refreshing mist](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cooling-mist-1) to people on hot summer days. The W.E.T. is capped with [solar panels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/eo-canopy) that enable it to power a light at night. Haiden Goggin, Christina Fenton, Anthony Traviglini and Jonathan Holland will have made picnicking even more pleasurable. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 51% | Activity: 76% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Eco-friendly Park Equipment:** The W.E.T system proves that park equipment can function sustainably by improving parkgoers' experiences while harvesting and reusing natural resources. - **Multi-functional Outdoor Equipment:** The W.E.T system demonstrates the potential for outdoor equipment to serve multiple functions, such as providing shade, rainwater collection and mist, and lighting at night. - **Smart Parks:** The W.E.T system marks a step towards smart parks, where technology-enhanced equipment can improve park experiences and make them more sustainable and autonomous. ### Where This Applies - **Parks and Recreation:** The W.E.T system addresses a challenge in the parks and recreation industry, and highlights the potential for innovative equipment to enhance park experiences. - **Sustainability:** The W.E.T system showcases the importance of sustainability in industries that rely on natural resources, such as the water sector and agriculture. - **Smart Cities:** The W.E.T system fits into the vision of smart cities, where technology is used to improve the efficiency, sustainability, and livability of urban environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Multifunctional Park Picnic Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foldable-picnic-furniture.md) - [Grid-Connected Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/solar-electric-pavilion.md) - [Light-Equipped Outdoor Sun Covers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/led-starry-night-sun-shade.md) - [Rainwater Multifunctional Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/raindrop-1.md) - [Urban Solar Charging Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perovia.md) - [Flying Umbrella Prototypes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flying-umbrella.md) - [Self-Cooling Outdoor Tents](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/temperatureregulating-tents.md) - [Wearable Poncho-Style Tents](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/onetigris-tentsformer.md) - [Connected Dual Functioning Umbrellas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hulasol.md)
