# Weird Events The Famous Frog-Jumping Contest By Trendopoly | Published 2007-05-21 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/weird-events-the-famous-frog-jumping-contest References: [cnewsnoe](http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNews/2007/05/20/4196194-ap.html) & [frogtown.org](http://www.frogtown.org/jubilee.shtml) Every year, Calaveras County holds a Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. This bizarre event attracts huge throngs of people eager to break the World Record set in 1986 for the cash prize of $5000. For you animal lovers out there that might be raising and eyebrow out of consideration for the frogs - apparently, a Frog Welfare Policy was put into place in 1995 to ensure human treatment of the little (and not so little) green hoppers. **Implications** - But that hasn't caused this odd annual tradition from continuing with force. The Calaveras Country Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee has grown to contain a staggering 35,000 attendees. It's a boon to the local economy, generating roughly $25.5 million due to increased restaurant use, hotel stays, and retail purchases. Hear that? That's the sound of other small towns and counties racing to organize their own unusual town tradition. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 3% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Pets](https://www.trendhunter.com/pets) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Unusual Town Traditions:** Small towns and counties are organizing their own unique events to attract visitors and boost their local economies. - **Animal-focused Spectacles:** Bizarre events centered around animals are drawing large crowds and creating economic opportunities for local businesses. - **Festivals for Record-breaking:** Competitions involving unusual activities are becoming popular events that attract participants and spectators alike. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Tourism & Hospitality:** The influx of visitors to these events creates opportunities for hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses to cater to large crowds. - **Retail:** Unusual town traditions increase retail purchases as attendees look for souvenirs and mementos from these unique events. - **Event Management:** The rise of bizarre events creates a need for professional event organizers and planners to help small towns and counties successfully execute their unique traditions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Amphibious Leap Day Doughnuts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leapling-doughnut.md) - [Record-Breaking Pickle Parties](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/worlds-largest-pickle-party.md) - [Mechanical Pickle Rides](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mechanical-pickle-ride.md) - [Adoptable Rabbit Races](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-bunny-bowl.md) - [Festive French Fry Events](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/st-patricks-daythemed-event.md) - [Tuna-Focused Film Festivals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tuna-cans-film-festival.md) - [Whimsical Outdoor Festivals](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/foffys-wonderland.md) - [Frog-Topped QSR Pizzas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/goblin-pizza.md) - [Griddled Food Fairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2023-iowa-state-fairs.md)
