# Cedar-Trimmed Residences This Weekend Residence Features an Irregular Floor Plan By Vasiliki Marapas | Published 2014-08-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/weekend-residence References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2014/08/27/architecture-ecran-house-alain-carle-quebec/) & [alaincarle](http://alaincarle.ca/) Canadian architect Alain Carle updated 'L'Écran,' a weekend residence located in Quebec, with extensive [cedar paneling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/91-cedar-house). Against the black-painted brick, the cedar calls attention to the terraces, windows and entrances of this sprawling property. The architect used the awkwardly-shaped site to his advantage, creating a floor plan that optimizes for the surrounding views. He erected a series of walls that redirect focus from the busy streets, towards the lake. Severing the home's relationship with the street allowed the architect to maintain the "geometrical complexity" of the site. The [timber and steel building](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-in-saidera) is bolstered with [recycled brick](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tallowwood-cabin); however, all the surfaces are painted black, offering consistency and cohesion with the rest of the exterior. The cedar panels work to break up the uniformity. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.3/10 - Popularity: 67% | Activity: 23% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Cedar Paneling:** Opportunities for interior/exterior design innovation through the use of cedar paneling. - **Irregular Floor Plans:** Opportunities for architects to use irregular floor plans to optimize surrounding views. - **Recycled Brick:** Opportunities for sustainable building practices using recycled brick. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** The use of cedar paneling and irregular floor plans offers disruptive innovation opportunities for modern architecture. - **Interior Design:** Incorporating cedar paneling allows for a unique interior design element that creates cohesion with the exterior. - **Sustainable Building:** The use of recycled brick in construction offers disruptive innovation opportunities for a more sustainable building industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Forest-Nestled Dynamic Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/q88-residence.md) - [Meadow-Overlooking Sleek Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studioac-1.md) - [Faceted Cedar Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-house-on-a-hill.md) - [Timber-Clad Canadian Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/la-cime.md) - [Mountainside Cedar Alpine Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elizabeth-roberts-architects.md) - [Wooden Screened Cantilevered Home](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elbow-house.md) - [Cedar-Clad Cabin Resorts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/prospect-berkshires-resort.md) - [Contemporary Mountainous Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mountainous-home.md) - [Gabled Cedar Paneling Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cotton-patch-hills-house.md)
