Non-profit organizations often host yard sales and thrift stores with the help of the community in order to fundraise in a manner that includes people but also doesn't rely so heavily on donations. This method allows for an innovative way for charities to get some much needed cash. The initiative also draws on the idea of collaborative consumption. Many of us have tons and tons of things in our houses and apartments that we never use and moreover, don't even want. But there are simplified ways to turn it into something useful.
