# Broad-Spanning Bungalows Johnson Fain's Award-Winning Wall House Features a Flat Facade By Joey Haar | Published 2017-06-28 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wall-house References: [archinect](http://archinect.com/news/bustler/5760/all) & [johnsonfain](http://johnsonfain.com/projects/architecture/residential/wall-house-ojai/) Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnson Fain recently erected '[Wall House](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stoic-wall-residence),' and award-winning family home in the town of Ojai, California. The secluded bungalow has all the ostensible trappings of a [humble country abode](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/maurpankhi), with abundant native foliage spread across the 12-acre plot, but it nonetheless sports a markedly modern design aesthetic. The front-facing facade of Wall House makes the home's name clear. The shape is almost uniformly flat, with a [Corten steel facade](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acute-house) that is punctuated by a few windows and little else. Though only a single storey, the facade wall rises above the height of the roof, giving Wall House an imposing height from that angle. Rounding to the back, ample windows and a welcoming living area contrast against the sternness of its transverse side. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.9/10 - Popularity: 91% | Activity: 78% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Flat Facade Design:** Embracing a flat facade design in architecture can create a sleek and modern aesthetic, offering opportunities for unique material choices and creative use of space. - **Seamless Integration of Natural Surroundings:** Creating homes that seamlessly blend with their natural surroundings can provide a harmonious living experience and highlight the beauty of the environment. - **Mixing Traditional and Modern Elements:** Combining traditional and modern design elements in architecture can create striking juxtapositions and unique living spaces that cater to both nostalgia and innovation. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture and Design:** The architecture and design industry can leverage the trend of flat facade design and seamless integration of natural surroundings to create innovative residential and commercial spaces. - **Construction and Real Estate:** The construction and real estate industry can explore the trend of mixing traditional and modern elements to create attractive and marketable properties that cater to diverse consumer preferences. - **Sustainable Living and Eco-friendly Construction:** The sustainable living and eco-friendly construction industry can adopt the trend of blending with natural surroundings to create environmentally conscious homes that minimize their ecological impact. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Blocky Extended Transformed Bunaglows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/osullivan-skoufoglou-architects.md) - [Sculptural Facade Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fractal-facade-house.md) - [Angled Concrete Forest Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/block-wall-house.md) - [Simple Material Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/openfield-house.md) - [Minimal Mountain Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caju-house.md) - [Concrete Block-Formed Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blockwall-house.md) - [Wood Cladded Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grafton-house.md) - [Asian Material Suburban Residents](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/glass-ridge-house.md) - [Narrow Lot-Based Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/curtain-house.md)
