# Cottage-Like Home Extensions This House-Shaped Addition Was Deisgned by 'Vokes and Peters' By Katherine Pendrill | Published 2015-11-02 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vokes-and-peters References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2015/10/31/queensland-bungalow-house-shaped-extension-australia-vokes-and-peters/) & [vokesandpeters](http://vokesandpeters.com/residential/west-end-cottage/) The architecture studio 'Vokes and Peters' recently designed a cottage-like [home extension](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/henville-street-house) for a residence in Queensland, Australia. For home owners with small properties, building an addition is an easy way to maximize space. However, it can be difficult to design an extension that complements the existing structure. Vokes and Peters managed to double the size of a [single-story bungalow](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seventies-house) called 'West End Cottage' by adding an extension. The addition is located at the back of the home and it is designed to complement the home's original character. The new addition mirrors Queensland's traditional vernacular style and the aesthetics of heritage buildings. While the extension blends into the existing home, it features some subtle differences, such as horizontal wooden cladding boards and black walls. The cottage-like extension demonstrates how architects can marry [traditional design with modern materials](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/catalog-house). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.8/10 - Popularity: 55% | Activity: 22% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Cottage-like Home Extensions:** Designing cottage-like home extensions that complement existing structures can be a competitive advantage for architects. - **Maximizing Space at Home with Extensions:** Innovations in home extensions could lead to more effective ways to maximize space in small properties or homes with limited land areas. - **Blending Traditional Design with Modern Materials:** Opportunities for architects to combine traditional design styles with modern materials can enhance the aesthetic appeal of their designs. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture and Design:** Architects and designers can incorporate cottage-like home extensions in their portfolio to offer an innovative solution for homeowners with small properties. - **Real Estate Development:** Real estate developers can create more value and appeal for potential buyers by partnering with innovative architects to design home extensions that can maximize space and maintain original character. - **Construction Materials:** Manufacturers of construction materials can innovate building components to accommodate the design requirements of cottage-like home extensions that combine traditional styles with modern materials. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Reimaged Edwardian Cottage Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hop-cottage.md) - [Renovated Cottage Garden Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/john-ellway.md) - [Medieval Cottage Steel Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/watercress-cottage.md) - [Charred Timber Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grotto-studio.md) - [Textural Tranquil Cottage Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harriets-house.md) - [Flexible Family Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-simple-addition.md) - [Timber-Clad Home Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thornbury-house.md) - [Adaptive Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carlton-cottage-extension.md) - [Timber-Framed Cottage Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/allotment-cottage.md)
