Developed by Seattle-based tech startup VICIS and design studio Artefact, these [football helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/football-series) utilize VICIS’ and Artefact’s concept of local deformation and utilizes outer layers of the helmet to slow acceleration and protect the brain by absorbing the impact of a collision. Inspired by the automotive industry, the VICIS football helmet features columnar layers like the ones found in a car bumper. These layers drastically absorb impact by locally deforming, moving in an omnidirectional fashion to react to impact coming from any direction. The VICIS football helmet also features a redesigned chin strap that allows for [improved fit](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-helmets), while also offering increased visibility. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.3/10 - Popularity: 14% | Activity: 48% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Sports](https://www.trendhunter.com/sports) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Improved Sports Safety:** The VICIS football helmet demonstrates an innovation opportunity to improve safety in other sports and athletic activities. - **Incorporation of Automotive Technology in Sports:** The use of columnar layers similar to those found in car bumpers in the VICIS football helmet can lead to disruptive innovation in the sports equipment industry. - **Customizable and Comfortable Athletic Gear:** The redesigned chin strap in the VICIS football helmet can inspire disruptive innovation opportunities to create more comfortable and customizable athletic gear across various industries. ### Who This Affects Most - **Sports Equipment:** The VICIS football helmet demonstrates disruptive innovation opportunities for improving safety and comfort in various sports equipment industries. - **Automotive:** The use of columnar layers in the design of the VICIS football helmet can lead to innovative opportunities in the automotive industry for enhancing safety features in cars. - **Medical:** The technology and methods used in the VICIS football helmet can inspire innovation opportunities for developing better medical equipment for injury prevention and recovery. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Lightweight Helmet Liners](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/helmet-liner.md) - [Interchangeable Component Sport Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/customizable-helmet.md) - [Intelligent Hockey Player Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bearmind-helmet.md) - [Lightweight Electric Bike Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/virgo.md) - [Foldable Air Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-ventete-ah1.md) - [Breakaway Panel Bike Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canyon-deflectr-rls-helmet.md) - [Inflatable Accordion-Style Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ventete-ah1.md) - [Slope-Ready Winter Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beanie-helmet.md) - [Airbag-Integrated Bicycle Helmets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airbag-bicycle-helmet.md)
