# Atypically Arched Abodes The Vault House by Johnston Marklee Looks Like Chic Swiss Cheese By Meghan Young | Published 2014-11-19 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vault-house References: [wallpaper](http://www.wallpaper.com/fashion/fashionweeks/2014/aw/womens/paris) & [johnstonmarklee](http://www.johnstonmarklee.com/?n=archive&id=28) To some, the Vault House will look like a big chunk of Swiss cheese with its abstract cutouts. Yet to others it will simply look like a [contemporary work of art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fractal-facade-house) that someone is lucky enough to call home. An all-white structure with an arch motif present throughout, the Vault House rests on a set of stilts to solidify itself as a [practical beach house](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/villa-a) as well. Designed by Johnston Marklee, the Vault House is located in Oxnard, California. The architect shares, "The Vault House challenges the typology commonly found on [narrow oceanfront lots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/campos-studio). Instead of directing its focus on the single prime ocean view, an array of transparent interior spaces layered inside the main volume, offer a multiplicity of oblique views through the house while capturing natural light from a variety of angles." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 29% | Activity: 26% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Abstract Cutouts in Architecture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new ways of incorporating abstract cutouts into architectural designs to create visually unique and functional spaces. - **Contemporary Arch Motif:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Experiment with contemporary arch motifs to redefine the traditional forms and aesthetics of architectural structures. - **Transparent Interior Spaces:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop innovative techniques to create transparent interior spaces that offer oblique views and maximize natural light utilization within buildings. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Revolutionize architectural designs by incorporating abstract cutouts, contemporary arch motifs, and transparent interior spaces to create visually stunning and functional structures. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new possibilities in interior design by incorporating abstract cutouts, contemporary arch motifs, and transparent interior spaces to create unique and visually captivating living spaces. - **Construction:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Apply innovative construction methods and materials to bring to life architectural designs that feature abstract cutouts, contemporary arch motifs, and transparent interior spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Monochromatic Minimal Cozy Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vaulted-monochrome-haus.md) - [Vaulted Compact Merged Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/catalejo.md) - [Upward-Pitched Roof Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/oneill-mcvoy-architects.md) - [Monolithic Sleek Summer Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vollerup-atrium.md) - [Volcano-Surrounding Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leit-house.md) - [Mountaintop Cantilevered Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitae-house.md) - [Swiss Army Knife-Resembling Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crest-guesthouse.md) - [Sculptural Inverted Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-with-an-inverted-roof.md) - [Hilltop Modern Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-cloud-house.md)
