# Sliced Levitating Buildings The Variations On a Dark City by Espen Dietrichson Skeletal By Alexandra Serrano | Published 2012-09-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/variations-on-a-dark-city-by-espen-dietrichson References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2012/09/22/variations-on-a-dark-city-by-espen-dietrichson/) & [espendietrichson](http://www.espendietrichson.com/) The Variations On a Dark City by Espen Dietrichson pictorial is part of the artist's exhibition at the French gallery Galerie Roger Tator. The Norwegian artist explores the skeletal aspects of Lyon's buildings by taking them apart. The walls and roof of each construction are taken apart and levitated to resemble exploded axonometric diagrams. Each manipulated image is created with an incorporation of drawings and photography. This surrealist imagery explores the question of architecture's bare minimum. With the levitating aspect of this series, each Lyon building seems to have a sense of fluidity. Each paradoxical image is a fantastic show of artful aesthetic manipulation and surrealism. The photographs are part of the One of Many Unusual Moments exhibition by Espen Dietrichson. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 48% | Activity: 60% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Levitating Architecture:** Opportunity for designers to explore unconventional building structures and innovative levitation technology. - **Skeletal Realism:** Trend towards artistic exploration of the bare minimum in architecture and design. - **Surrealistic Imagery:** Opportunity for artists to experiment with combining drawings and photography in imaginative ways. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to push boundaries and challenge traditional building norms. - **Art:** Trend towards futuristic and unconventional art that incorporates elements of surrealism. - **Photography:** Opportunity for photographers to experiment with new techniques and combine various mediums in their work. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Mountaintop Cantilevered Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/levitae-house.md) - [Laser-Cut Urban Artistry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/laser-cut-city-maps.md) - [Graphic-Accented Brutalist Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jean-verville.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Gem-Like Sculptural Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cylindrical-lenses.md) - [Sculptural Experimental Artforms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ladder-series.md) - [Sculptural Inverted Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-with-an-inverted-roof.md) - [Warped Georgian Townhouse Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-week-at-the-knees.md) - [Whimsical Sculptural Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/city-block-series.md)
