# Underwater SMS for Divers UDI Digital Texting By Bianca | Published 2008-01-05 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/utc-udi References: [slashgear](http://www.slashgear.com/ces-2008-underwater-technology-center’s-udi-allows-text-messaging-underwater-059372.php) & [utc-digital](http://www.utc-digital.com/) Communicating under water can be quite difficult. Wouldn't it be so much easier if you could just text your dive buddies when you found a cool new cave to explore, or when you were panicking because your oxygen was running out? That's precisely what[UTC](http://www.utc-digital.com)was thinking too, which is why they invented the two-way digital text messaging service. The underwater SMS device is mounted onto the user's arm and allows for communication not only with the rest of the underwater team, but with those on boats above or waiting on land. It's called the UDI which stands for Underwater Digital Interface. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.3/10 - Popularity: 75% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Underwater Communication Technology:** The development of underwater SMS devices presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in the field of communication technology for divers. - **Real-time Communication for Divers:** The invention of the UDI as an underwater SMS device opens up possibilities for real-time communication, enabling divers to quickly and efficiently share information and coordinate activities. - **Enhanced Safety Measures for Divers:** The implementation of two-way digital text messaging service for divers can lead to disruptive innovation in safety measures, providing a more effective means of communication during underwater activities. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Marine Technology:** The development of underwater SMS devices has the potential to disrupt the marine technology industry, offering new communication solutions for divers and enhancing underwater exploration capabilities. - **Recreational Diving:** The introduction of the UDI as an underwater SMS device has the potential to disrupt the recreational diving industry by improving communication among divers, enhancing safety, and providing new opportunities for exploration. - **Search and Rescue Operations:** The use of the UDI and similar underwater SMS devices in search and rescue operations can lead to disruptive innovation in the industry, enabling better coordination and communication between divers and rescue teams. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Demure Dive-Proof Smartwatches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/huawei-watch-ultimate-2.md) - [Diving-Ready Smartphone Protectors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diveroid-universal-lite.md) - [Communicative Diver Smartwatches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garmin-descent-dive-computers.md) - [Ultra-Connected Diving Watches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/descent-g2.md) - [Arm-Attached Underwater Scooters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/underwater-scooters.md) - [Compact Underwater Scooters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/asiwo-u1.md) - [Diving-Friendly Smartphone Cases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/divevolk-seatouch-4-max-platinum.md) - [Multitasking Underwater Drones](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/multitasking-underwater-drone.md) - [Large-Format Dive Computers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dive-computer1.md)
