# Homeless Sleeping Pods The Urban Catepillar by Abby Brazier Shelters the Less Fortunate By Meghan Young | Published 2010-10-26 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-catepillar References: [thedesignblog.org](http://www.thedesignblog.org/entry/urban-caterpillar-is-an-instant-housing-for-homeless/) & [abbylaurenbrazierrbonmade](http://abbylaurenbrazier.carbonmade.com/) I find it admirable that there are so many designs and innovations popping up for the homeless such as the Urban Catepillar. Not only is homelessness an epidemic in urban settings, the number of [natural disasters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/seoul-wing) that have hit the world lately has inspired many designers to help in any way that they can. One such designer is Abby Brazier. Brazier's Urban Catepillar design is a [sleeping pod](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-nests-treepod-project) that shields its users from the cold, wind and rain. An instant shelter, it will hopefully save lives if put into production. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.9/10 - Popularity: 78% | Activity: 90% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Homeless Shelter Innovations:** The Urban Catepillar design showcases the trend of creating innovative and effective sleeping pods for homeless individuals. - **Humanitarian Design Solutions:** The growing number of natural disasters has sparked a trend in designers creating innovative solutions, like the Urban Catepillar, to help those affected. - **Sustainable Housing Solutions:** The Urban Catepillar sleeping pod highlights the trend of developing sustainable and portable housing options for the less fortunate. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Design and Architecture:** The Urban Catepillar showcases an opportunity for designers and architects to create functional and affordable sleeping pod designs for the homeless. - **Humanitarian Aid:** The growing need for shelter solutions due to homelessness and natural disasters presents an opportunity for the humanitarian aid industry to support and invest in innovative designs like the Urban Catepillar. - **Social Impact and Sustainability:** The Urban Catepillar design aligns with the social impact and sustainability industry's goals of creating positive change and providing sustainable housing options for those in need. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Origami-Inspired Disaster Relief Pods](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/prefab-folding-pods.md) - [Humanized Waiting Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/de-wachtkamer.md) - [Homeless Support Backpacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-makeshift-traveler-backpack.md) - [Biodegradable Wildlife Habitats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biodegradable-wildlife-habitat.md) - [Eco-Friendly Modular Refugee Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/allspace-1.md) - [Climate-Responsive Prefab Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drop-pod.md) - [Sustainable Portable Cat Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/batsy-cat-shelter.md) - [Eco‑tiny Sanctuarys](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tign-tiny-homes.md) - [Reinvented Compact Living](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/affordable-housing-prototype.md)
