# Beautiful Boiling Canteens The Urban Billy Embodies Contemporary Design and Traditional Technology By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-03-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/urban-billy References: [notcot.org](http://www.notcot.org/post/53128/) & [elliatrich](http://www.elliatrich.com/projects/urban-billy-2013/) Even though I have a functional kettle and a working stove, I would be easily drawn to using the Urban Billy to make my tea instead. With the beautiful hand-formed [borosilicate glass](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-glassware) and the gorgeous bent mountain ash wood sleeves and cap, the tall vessel and the [pair of teacups](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cuptone-teacup) expresses a contemporary poise and purity. Elliat Rich's elegant object has been influenced by the quintessential Australian billycan, traditionally used for [heating water while camping](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/billie-pit) in the outback. It's clear that this collection is much more refined than the old repurposed tins, even incorporating a small fuel dish in the base of the boiler. The Urban Billy makes the process of brewing your beverage transparent and enticing. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.3/10 - Popularity: 27% | Activity: 34% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Contemporary Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore new materials and aesthetics in everyday objects to create visually appealing and functional products. - **Traditional Technology:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Combine traditional methods of production with modern technology to create unique and sustainable products. - **Transparent Brewing Process:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop innovative brewing devices that enhance the user experience and make the brewing process more engaging. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Home Appliance Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate contemporary design and traditional technologies in the manufacturing of home appliances to create unique and visually striking products. - **Camping Equipment:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Redesign traditional camping equipment, such as billycans, with modern materials and technologies to enhance functionality and appeal to a wider consumer base. - **Kitchenware and Tableware:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Introduce transparent brewing devices and other innovative kitchenware and tableware products that provide a visually engaging experience for consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Tea Vessel-Inspired Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moonkettle.md) - [Stacked Tea Kettle Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stacked-tea-kettle.md) - [Minimal Metallic Stealthy Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aarke-kettle.md) - [Slick Tech-Advanced Minimalist Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/luna-electric-kettle.md) - [Tumbler-Inspired Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/electric-travel-kettle.md) - [Minimalist Designer Kitchen Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/usm-kettle.md) - [Playful Teapot Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/teapot-design1.md) - [Digital Tea Brewing Bottles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bota-bottle.md) - [Style-Conscious Coffee Kettles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artisan-gooseneck-kettle.md)
