Inspired by the age-old Chinese solution of suspending vegetables below the roof, designer Zhang Wei has developed a system for [storing food](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/totem) in contraptions that look and operate much like helium balloons. The project proposes a collection of separate capsules to store different edible items, allowing each element to remain lightweight, and affording the consumer to cool each compartment to a specific temperature. The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator can be accessed by pulling it down with a hanging cord that works as a wireless charger, and each unit can float back up to the ceiling, thanks to its calculated release or production of gas. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.0/10 - Popularity: 37% | Activity: 16% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Home](https://www.trendhunter.com/home) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Floating Food Storage:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator concept offers a disruptive innovation opportunity for creating floating food storage systems, freeing up floor space in kitchens. - **Multi-compartmental Cooling:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator's separate capsules for different edible items provide an opportunity for disruptive innovation in creating multi-compartmental cooling systems, allowing for precise temperature control of each compartment. - **Wireless Charging Integration:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator's use of a hanging cord as a wireless charger presents an opportunity for disruptive innovation in integrating wireless charging technology into household appliances. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Appliance Manufacturing:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator concept opens up disruptive innovation opportunities for appliance manufacturers to create compact, floating food storage solutions. - **Smart Home Technology:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator's wireless charging integration offers disruptive innovation opportunities for smart home technology companies to develop wireless charging solutions for appliances. - **Food Packaging:** The Up-in-the-Air Refrigerator's multi-compartmental cooling system creates disruptive innovation opportunities for food packaging companies to design specialized packaging for maintaining different temperatures within each capsule. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sleek Food Display Fridges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kollect-smart.md) - [Bespoke Multi-Section Refrigerators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arte-mini-refrigerator.md) - [Wheel-Base Smart Refrigerators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fridze.md) - [Space-Themed Kitchen Appliances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-fooding.md) - [Organized 18-Zone Refrigerators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/xiaomi-mijia-refrigerator-pro.md) - [AI Recipe Assistant Fridges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jumbo-sidebyside-refrigerator.md) - [Rotating Food Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/saveit.md) - [Suitcase-Style Mini Fridge](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-mini-fridge.md) - [3-in-1 Convertible Fridges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/midea-5050-flex.md)
