# Fibrous Line-Defined Edifices The LACMA Campus is Expressed as a Three-Dimensional Sketch By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-10-10 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/unravelled-lacma-campus References: [suckerpunchdaily](http://www.suckerpunchdaily.com/2012/10/09/unravelled/) A thoughtful architect will first ponder the tools available to him before diving into a design. The Unravelled LACMA Campus proposal has certainly been conceived with such fundamental considerations as it manifests in a rather unconventional way. Fernando Herrera set the notion of surfaces and planes aside in favor of celebrating the invaluable role that the line plays in defining spaces. Strands of structure begin to enclose certain areas and open up in others, becoming both the ceilings and the walls but remaining in a separate class of their own. The whole project takes shape as a colossal sculpture, encompassing the entire college grounds in a tangled mass, rather than as a cluster of assorted buildings. The Unravelled LACMA Campus would encourage occupants to rethink their relationships with their built environment. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 57% | Activity: 9% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Line-defined Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to explore new forms of structures that prioritize the role of lines in creating defining spaces. - **Sculptural Building Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for architects to challenge conventional building design by incorporating sculptural forms that completely transform the built environment. - **Environmental Sustainability:** Opportunity to build structures that promote sustainable living habits and encourage occupants to rethink their relationship with their surrounding environment. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** An opportunity for architects to transform the way they design and create structures using unconventional forms of line-defined design and innovative materials. - **Construction:** Opportunity for the construction industry to develop new techniques for building and incorporating sustainable features into structures, such as incorporating green roofs, solar panels, and other eco-friendly features while adhering to innovative building designs. - **Real Estate:** Disruptive innovation opportunity for the real estate industry to explore new ways of creating distinctive, innovative, and sustainable properties that cater to a new breed of eco-conscious consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Futuristic Cultural Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-lucas-museum-of-narrative-arts.md) - [Campus Art Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-ppw.md) - [Curved Surface Portuguese Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-within-a-few-lines.md) - [Brain-Like Labyrinths](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brash-collective.md) - [Metal-Wrapped Exhibition Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trace-architecture.md) - [Structured Art Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flowchart.md) - [Mountain-Based Curved Viewpoints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yunhai-forest-service-station.md) - [Protein-Inspired Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folded-protein-molecule.md) - [Contemporary Culture Hubs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tselinny-center.md)
