# Creepy Critter Pastries The University of Wageningen Insect Cupcake Party is Seriously Gross By Senduran Bhakthakumaran | Published 2012-04-21 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/university-of-wageningen-insect-cupcake References: [incrediblethings](http://www.incrediblethings.com/food/mega-gross-insect-cupcakes/) & [buzzfeed](http://www.buzzfeed.com/gavon/insect-cupcake-party) As a personal pastry lover I was horrified to hear of the University of Wageningen insect cupcake party. The cupcakes were not decorated as normal cupcakes, but were instead topped with insects. Caramelized grasshoppers and meal worms were used in developing these pastries. The University of Wageningen researched and found that insects offer a strong serving of protein and to celebrate the release of 'The Insect Cookbook' these delightful, infested pastries were born. The sources of nutrients offered by devouring these bugs is said to be catered towards growing populations, and perhaps insects will become a more common food item at more local get-togethers. Regardless, I am sure it will take quite some time before the general public accepts its creep crawling housemates as delectable dish servings. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 43% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Food](https://www.trendhunter.com/food) ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Scrumptious Scented Accessories](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/candice-ware.md) - [Decadent Decomposing Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/compost-cupcakes.md) - [Cute Jurassic Confections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dinosaur-cupcakes.md) - [Nutty Soda Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cocoa-cola-peanut-butter-cupcakes.md) - [Savory Pepperoni-Topped Cakes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pizza-cupcakes.md) - [Wizardly Chocolate Treats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cauldron-cakes.md) - [Curious Cone-Topped Desserts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mint-chocolate-chip-cake.md) - [Sugary Sweet Toadstools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meringue-mushrooms.md)
