Ultra-wideband technology was the subject of many studies during the 2000s, but since then little research has been conducted. Instead, other short-range wireless technologies were favored, including WiFi and Bluetooth. The technology is being developed through FiRa Consortium which is a collaboration of a few different tech companies to work on the ultra-wideband technology. The companies involved include Sony, Samsung LitePoint, and [Bosch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spexor). The technology could be utilized for enhanced location tracking. This could help users navigate large spaces like airports or shopping malls. Other applications could include finding others in a crowd. It could also be used for security purposes, where users could be notified if someone is approaching a secured location.
