# Post-Apocalyptic Artwork The Ultima II Series Visualizes Human Civilization in the Future By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2014-05-08 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ultima-ii References: [visualnews](http://www.visualnews.com/2014/03/05/talk-nick-pedersen-ultima-fantastically-detailed-vision-future/) & [nick-pedersen](http://nick-pedersen.com/) Artist Nick Pedersen's 'Ultima II' is a series of [post-apocalyptic visualizations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/death-stranding-2) that expand on the themes and concepts explored by the original series, Ultima I. Ultima II depicts a world containing lifeless remnants of its past. Long-dormant nuclear plants lie dormant, while the wrecks of cruise ships crumble on the shores and [remnants of street art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/echoes-of-time) remain, no longer understandable or recognizable. The landscape is not completely lifeless however, as it's occupied by mysterious humans and their dogs, who are seen living in [wintry landscapes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frostpunk-1886) lit by northern lights up in the sky. Their style of life is shown to be rather primitive -- they warm themselves using open fires for example -- but they still appear content. This kind of depiction is intended to prompt the user into wondering about what may happen if and when modern society implodes, and if the consequences that follow might actually be a good thing. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.6/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 1% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Post-apocalyptic Artwork:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Exploring alternative scenarios and potential positive outcomes in the aftermath of a societal collapse. - **Visualizing Future Civilization:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Creating art that sparks conversations and reflections on the impact of human civilization on the environment and the potential for resilience and adaptation. - **Primitive Living in Post-apocalyptic Settings:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Designing and developing products and services that cater to the needs of a more primitive lifestyle in the face of societal collapse. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art and Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Leveraging artistic expression to provoke discussions about the potential consequences of human actions on the planet and society. - **Environmental Sustainability:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Finding innovative ways to address the potential challenges and consequences of a post-apocalyptic world and promote sustainable practices and resilience. - **Outdoor Survival and Prepping:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Developing products and services to support survival and preparedness in a post-apocalyptic setting, catering to the needs of individuals adapting to a more primitive lifestyle. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI-Generated Retrofuturistic Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/retrofuturistic-objects.md) - [AI Post-Apocalyptic Cities](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-universe.md) - [Post-Apocalyptic City-Building Games](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frostpunk-2.md) - [Dramatic Doomsday Bunker Images](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alastair-philip-wiper.md) - [Explosion-Damaged Sculpture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/light-into-darkness.md) - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Retro Space-Themed Puzzled Posters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/john-carter.md) - [Destructive Nature Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/keita-miyazaki.md) - [Post-Pandemic Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bonami.md)
