The UCSF Institute for Regeneration Medicine is a remarkable example of how architectural ingenuity can overcome even the most difficult challenges.

Because the [University of California SF](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybrid-flax-pavilion) is located on a mountainside, its available room for expansion is fairly limited. Rafael Viñoly Architects have cleverly approached that problem by designing the UCSF Institute for Regeneration Medicine to be a [horizontal green-roofed tower that curves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-island) and contours with the [sloping hillside](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/b2a-architects). The building houses four giant green roof terraces that help regulate the institute's interior temperatore while also soaking up rainwater -- two benefits that contributed to the building's Silver LEEDs status.
