# Twisting Pavement Courtyards 'Twisting Courtyard' Merges Interior and Exterior Spaces By Joey Haar | Published 2017-06-09 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twisting-courtyard References: [dezeen](https://www.dezeen.com/2017/06/09/twisting-courtyard-house-grey-brick-paving-connects-internal-external-spaces-architecture-residential-beijing-china-arch-studio/) & [archstudio.cn](http://www.archstudio.cn/case/24_31/) By its very tautology, architecture is a practice of delineating interior and exterior space, but 'Twisting Courtyard' works to subvert that notion. As its name states, the home's courtyard consists of [undulating pavement that curves and bends](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-within-a-few-lines), ultimately creating both exterior coverings and interior niches through the selfsame shapes. Twisting Courtyard was designed by [Arch Studio](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arch-house), a Beijing practice, and the family home was further built in the Chinese capital city. The [curvaceous courtyard](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/patio-house-residence) is a unique and modern feature, but much of the home's design pays tribute to the traditional history of the city. It is lain out in the same format as a traditional Siheyuan, which is a residential morphology common to Beijing's famous hutong neighborhoods and made necessary by those hutongs' narrow alleyways. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 80% | Activity: 19% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Blurring Boundaries:** Twisting Courtyard blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, offering opportunities for innovative designs that integrate nature and architecture. - **Curvaceous Architecture:** The use of undulating pavement in Twisting Courtyard showcases the trend of curvaceous architecture, creating unique and visually striking designs. - **Modernizing Tradition:** Twisting Courtyard combines modern design elements with traditional residential morphology, presenting opportunities for innovation in preserving cultural heritage. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Architects can explore new approaches to integrating interior and exterior spaces, experimenting with curvaceous designs and preserving traditional elements. - **Construction:** Construction companies can develop expertise in working with undulating pavements and curvaceous architecture, offering unique and visually appealing structures to clients. - **Urban Planning:** Urban planners can incorporate the concept of blurring boundaries between spaces in the development of new neighborhoods and communities, creating innovative and dynamic urban environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Blocky Courtyard Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-of-courtyards.md) - [Tranquil Courtyard Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sanctum-house.md) - [Tranquil Functional Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-varun.md) - [Patio-Centering Villa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-tres-patis.md) - [Tranquil Courtyard Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cupertino-courtyard-house.md) - [Subterranean Courtyard Galleries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hermit-space.md) - [London-Based Narrow Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/courtyard-house-1.md) - [Temple-Inspired Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/j-kidman-architecture.md) - [Barn-Form Family Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twisted-house1.md)
