Inspired by his grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer's, the Design Academy Eindhoven graduate aims to create furniture pieces that possess a strong sense of memory. The designer takes ordinary furniture pieces and coats them with steel. He then burns the pieces leaving only their ornate steel shell. A fan of simplicity and function, the designer takes design cues from the past stating that "a home-made object should only possess its bare essentials and fulfill its duty or purpose." These Tuomas Markunpoika Tolvanen furniture designs are constructed using an age-old technique that mixes steel and fire. Fusing aesthetics with function, these eclectic designs reference the past with their subtle ornamentation and eroded patina developed during the metal burning process. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 28% | Activity: 38% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Memory-inspired Furnishings:** The use of steel coating and burning process creates furniture pieces that evoke a strong sense of memory. - **Eroded Patina Designs:** The metal burning process results in furniture designs with a subtle ornamentation and an eroded patina, giving them a unique aesthetic. - **Functional Simplicity:** These furniture designs prioritize simplicity and function, embodying the idea that a home-made object should possess only its bare essentials and fulfill its purpose. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Manufacturing:** The use of steel coating and burning process in furniture production can introduce innovative designs and materials into the industry. - **Home Decor and Interior Design:** Memory-inspired furnishings with eroded patina designs can offer unique decorative options for homes and interior spaces. - **Aging Care and Memory Support:** The memory-inspired elements of these furnishings can enhance the user experience and well-being in caregiving environments for individuals with Alzheimer's and memory-related conditions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Textured Modern Furniture Lines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/touch-collections.md) - [Ultra-Elegant Timeless Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/timeless-furniture2.md) - [Ornamental Functional Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bells-and-whistles-collection.md) - [Elegant Woodturned Furniture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woodturned-furniture.md) - [Tubular Metal Furniture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tube-collection-1.md) - [Tailor-Made Furniture Ranges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aesthetics-and-functionality.md) - [Expressive Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bells-whistles.md) - [Impactful Industrial Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/to-steel-side-table.md) - [Timeless Furniture Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crafted-through-time-series.md)
