# Black Tudor-Style Cottages Salsten is a Somber Take on the Classic Architectural Style By Joey Haar | Published 2017-08-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tudorstyle-cottage References: [archdaily](http://www.archdaily.com/876908/salsten-skalso-arkitekter) Salsten, a vacation home in the village of Harnosand, Sweden, is a [Tudor-style cottage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hollywood-hills-house-1) in terms of its form. However, the building uses color to provide an interesting take on the traditional British architectural school. Rather than the combination of cream, black, and brown that often characterizes Tudor homes, Salsten is entirely black, giving it an almost creepy appearance (especially considering its relative loneliness near an isolated lake.) To be sure, the interior of Salsten isn't as unsettling as its exterior might feel for some people. The rooms throughout the home employ [classic Scandinavian design principles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-hkarn), sticking to monochrome color schemes and offering plenty of cozy accessories. There's also an attached sun room in all white that's far more pleasant than the ebony exterior indicates. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.4/10 - Popularity: 83% | Activity: 41% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Monochrome Architecture:** Embracing monochrome color schemes in architecture offers a unique and impactful visual experience. - **Modern Interpretation of Traditional Styles:** Reimagining traditional architectural styles with a modern twist creates opportunities for innovative and eye-catching designs. - **Contrasting Exterior and Interior Design:** Creating a stark contrast between the exterior and interior design elements of a building can captivate and surprise viewers. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture and Design:** Architects and designers can explore new ways of incorporating monochrome color schemes and modern twists into their projects. - **Hospitality and Tourism:** Hotels and vacation rental properties can leverage monochrome architecture and unique exterior designs to enhance the guest experience. - **Home Decor and Furnishings:** Interior decorators can use the concept of contrasting exterior and interior design to create visually stimulating and memorable spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dual Tonal Wooden Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/svart-hus.md) - [Tar-Coated Timber Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/house-tjurpannan.md) - [Blocky Structural Coastal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sa-hjort.md) - [Natural Material Stilted Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yngsj.md) - [Modern Interpreted English Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/eight-gables.md) - [Wedge-Shaped Stealthy Cottages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barbora-vokac-taylor-architect.md) - [Natural Material Scottish Cottages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iorram.md) - [Textural Tranquil Cottage Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harriets-house.md) - [Natural Material-Crafterd Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sommarhus-e.md)
