# Tree Trunk Canvases Mel Davis Tree Ring Design Paintings Look Like Open Windows By Gil Cohen | Published 2013-02-05 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tree-ring-design References: [flickr](http://www.flickr.com/photos/meldavis/sets/72157626863332100/) & [gocam.users.sonic.net](http://gocam.users.sonic.net/mel/mel_davis/paintings_-_tree_rounds.html) Artist Mel Davis utilizes the [texture of wood](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1) to compliment her painting in the tree ring design series called Tree Rounds. Not focused on detail and intricate patterns, the artist covers each [tree trunk slice](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/no1-common) with a wash of color that instantly gives a facelift to the wooden canvas. She then adds some elements of design such as a contrasting border, paint splatters and shading to add dimension to the pieces. The organic, rounded shapes of the paintings as well as the empty space, makes them seem like windows that are facing cloudy blue skies. Hanging the decorative tree ring design series on the wall would add an artistic and [natural element](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-for-the-trees) to any room. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.2/10 - Popularity: 25% | Activity: 4% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Tree Ring Design:** There are opportunities for artists and home decor companies to explore the natural textures of wood and create unique designs in home decor. - **Organic Shapes:** There is an opportunity for designers and furniture companies to explore using organic shapes and patterns in their creations, bringing a natural look to modern aesthetics. - **Empty Space:** There is an opportunity for artists and designers to explore the use of empty space in their creations, allowing for a more minimalist aesthetic while still being visually compelling. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art:** Artists can experiment with a different medium by exploring the natural textures of wood and creating unique designs in their works. - **Home Decor:** Home decor companies can incorporate natural textures like wood into their designs to create unique and visually compelling pieces of art and decor. - **Furniture:** Furniture designers and manufacturers can explore using organic shapes and patterns to create visually interesting pieces that bring a natural look to modern decor. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Repurposed Wooden Vessels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/darren-appiagyei.md) - [Leftover Househouse Paint Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paint-drop.md) - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Textured Pine Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crayon-pine.md) - [Towering Reclaimed Wooden Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/louise-durham.md) - [Time-Layered Wood Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/age-of-wood.md) - [Tree-Integrated Mysterious Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tree-mural.md) - [Hidden Garden Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-room-around-a-tree.md) - [Tree-Based Material Products](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/abney-effect.md)
