# Traditional African Courtyard-Inspired Furniture Terry Aidoo Debuts the Kabila Collection By Kalin Ned | Published 2026-07-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/traditional-african-courtyard References: [designarcus](https://designarcus.com/kabila-collection-terry-aidoo/) Terry Aidoo calls attention to the Kabila Collection — a [furniture line](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/furniture-collection1) consisting of a coffee table and accompanying stool that translates the social and [cultural significance](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lost-cloth-object) of the traditional African courtyard into [contemporary sculptural wooden objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/collective-collection). The Kabila Collection essentially transforms furniture from mere functional items into meaningful catalysts for human connection, gathering, and shared experience, with the name Kabila — meaning clan or tribe in both Swahili and Arabic — evoking identity shaped through collective memory and tradition rather than solely through bloodlines. The coffee table functions as a contemporary interpretation of the communal center, while the stools act as individual elements surrounding it. This mirrors the spatial relationships found within traditional courtyard settings and creates a landscape that actively encourages conversation, participation, and exchange. Embedded within the table's surface is a recessed circular detail referencing the Eritrean coffee ceremony, a ritual centered on hospitality and togetherness, and a carved interpretation of Oware, one of the oldest board games in West Africa.
