# Contemporary Asymmetrical Couches The Toward Sofa Embodies an Abstract and Adaptable Design By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-12-04 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/toward-sofa References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2013/12/03/toward-sofa-by-anne-boysen-for-erik-jorgensen/) & [anneboysen.dk](http://www.anneboysen.dk/) Once furnished, few rooms flaunt a mirrored image from wall to wall, so why don't more designers take up the opportunity to escape from symmetry in individual objects? The Toward Sofa demonstrates the delightful outcome of Anne Boysen's creativity that produces a [playfulness and visual intrigue](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/noom-hello-sofa) that would be sure to enliven a living room. This modern chesterfield consists of a [plushy mattress atop four wooden legs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rokko). The backrests are especially unusual since the pair of them differ in their height and length dimensions, and in many cases, their upholstery is of different shades of brown and gray. Erik Jørgensen manufactures the Toward Sofa with a pair of like armrests on either side too. These can be moved about to tighten, to widen or to separate the seating space. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.4/10 - Popularity: 79% | Activity: 14% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Asymmetrical Design:** Asymmetry is an increasingly popular trend in furniture design, creating playful and visually intriguing pieces. - **Modular Sofas:** Modular sofas like the Toward Sofa allow for customization and flexibility in seating arrangements. - **Mixed Materials:** The combination of plushy mattress, wooden legs, and mixed upholstery creates a visually interesting, contemporary piece. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Furniture designers can explore asymmetrical and modular design to create unique and customizable pieces. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can incorporate asymmetrical and modular furniture into spaces to create visually interesting and flexible seating arrangements. - **Home Goods Retail:** Home goods retailers can offer unique, contemporary furniture options that incorporate mixed materials and unconventional design elements. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Organically Shaped Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/repose-sofa.md) - [Flexible Landscape-Like Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airberg-sofa-collection.md) - [Ribbed-Cushioned Couches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/note-design.md) - [Oblong Color-Blocked Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/meritalia-morphologica-collection.md) - [Voluptuous Texture Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bretz-balaao.md) - [Curvaceous Modular Sofas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blocks-modular-sofa.md) - [Laidback Modular Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/natuzzi-bao.md) - [Rounded Modular Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smooth-sofa.md) - [Voluptuous Modern Sofa Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/reimagined-everyday-sofa.md)
