# Formal Hat Furnishings The Tophat Stool Has a Sophisticated Design With Unexpected Versatility By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-10-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tophat-stool References: [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/Tophat/9704407) The Tophat Stool might first strike you as a rather simple piece of furniture; however, its flexibility really demonstrates the cleverness of its design. The fairly [minimalist seating object](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/utzon-stool) comprises a [concrete base](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pebble-stool), a neck and a cap that looks like a top hat, and these can be fit together to produce a range of different furnishings. The best way to use it as a stool would be to choose the neck with the squared lid and to slide that onto the heavy pedestal. Should you prefer a [multi-seater](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-table-and-chair), you may opt for an elongated cap and two bases to form a bench of Dave Pickett's design. If storage space is what you need, stack these paired Tophat Stools together and you'll have yourself a shelf. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.0/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Modular Furniture:** The Tophat Stool's flexible design allows for the creation of multiple furniture pieces from a single set, presenting an opportunity for modular furniture. - **Multi-functional Design:** The Tophat Stool's ability to transform from a stool to a bench or shelf showcases the advantages of multi-functional design, offering potential for innovation in versatile furniture designs. - **Minimalist Aesthetic:** The Tophat Stool's simple, elegant design exhibits the beauty and appeal of minimalist aesthetics, presenting opportunities for innovation in minimalistic home decor and furniture. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** The Tophat Stool presents opportunities for disruptive innovation in furniture design, with a focus on modular, multi-functional and minimalist design concepts. - **Home Decor:** The Tophat Stool's sleek and versatile design offers opportunities for innovation in minimalist home decor, where multi-functional and modular designs are highly sought after. - **Interior Design:** The Tophat Stool's flexible design can be used to create unique and dynamic interiors, presenting opportunities for innovation in interior design with an emphasis on modular and multi-functional furniture. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Intuitive Entryway Seats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-front-stool.md) - [Colorful Dual-Purpose Stool Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/s1-stool.md) - [Modular Workspace Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/versatile-stool-design.md) - [Fan-Shaped Stackable Stool Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stool-concept.md) - [Multifaceted Geometric Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stackable-stools.md) - [Sculptural Monochromatic Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monochromatic-stool.md) - [Stackable Cork-Like Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drum-stool-1.md) - [Interlocking Wooden Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-tie-stool.md) - [Highly Functional Stools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/loki-stool.md)
