# Tomato-Growing Kits Back to the Roots' Organic Self-Watering Planter Simplifies At-Home Gardening By Laura McQuarrie | Published 2016-04-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tomato-growing References: [backtotheroots](https://backtotheroots.com/products/self-watering-planter) & [trndmonitor](https://trndmonitor.com/product-spotlight-introducing-the-new-back-to-the-roots-organic-self-watering-planter/) The Organic [Self-Watering Planter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-leafypod) from Back to the Roots makes the tomato-growing process easy. The entire system is contained within a large glass mason jar, which takes up virtually no space on a home countertop. Inside this piece, there's biochar and nutrient-rich soil that help to boost the potential for plant growth. In order to deliver water to the organic cherry tomato seeds that sit in the soil, the system uses a clay spout to deliver fresh nutrients. Water can be added once weekly to this [clay olla pot](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/plant-irrigation) in order to ensure the growing seeds get exactly the care they need, without being constantly fussed over. This kit is ideal for aspiring [urban gardeners](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aerospring-pinch-hydroponic-system) who want to enjoy produce that's been freshly grown at home but lack the physical space to set up a full garden. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.7/10 - Popularity: 77% | Activity: 56% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [DIY](https://www.trendhunter.com/diy) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Home Gardening Kits:** Opportunity for innovative kits that simplify at-home gardening for urban dwellers. - **Self-watering Planters:** Disruptive potential in creating planters that provide an automatic watering system for small-space gardening. - **Biochar Technology:** Innovation opportunity to develop biochar-based soil solutions that enhance plant growth in compact gardening environments. ### Who This Affects Most - **Home Gardening:** Opportunity for companies to create innovative products catering to the needs of urban gardeners with limited space. - **Home Appliances:** Potential for appliance manufacturers to design and produce self-watering planters as a convenient solution for small-scale gardening. - **Sustainable Agriculture:** Space-efficient gardening methods like using biochar-based soil can contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture practices. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Container-Based Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bottle-farm-mini.md) - [Uniquely Shaped Self-Watering Pots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/self-watering-plant-house.md) - [Modular Automated Indoor Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/totam-planter.md) - [Updated Indoor Gardening Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/indoor-gardening-solutions.md) - [Minimalist Indoor Gardening Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balconyfarm-pot.md) - [Automated Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-evergrow.md) - [Four-in-One Herb Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harry-herbs-indoor-herb-garden.md) - [Indoor Herb Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/auk-mini.md) - [Mini Mess-Free Garden Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponics-garden.md)
