# Minimalist Fortress-Like Farmsteads The Tom Ford Ranch by Tadao Ando is Domineeringly Beautiful By Meghan Young | Published 2013-05-22 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tom-ford-ranch References: [trendland](http://trendland.com/tom-fords-new-mexico-ranch-designed-by-tadao-ando/) & [andotadao.org](http://www.andotadao.org/) The Tom Ford Ranch looks like something out of a sci-fi flick, one in which the audience is treated to a futuristic view of what a once common landscape now looks like. In this case, that landscape is just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In place of wooden houses and metal fences, the Tom Ford Ranch introduces [clean minimalist lines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/caju-house) and smooth fortress-like walls that are as stylish as the designer's clothing. Designed by famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the Tom Ford Ranch plays on the sweeping surroundings and strong light to great effect. It is no surprise that it is a work of art since Ford expresses, "New Mexico has always been a very spiritual place for me, even before I realised I was particularly spiritual." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.3/10 - Popularity: 95% | Activity: 87% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Minimalist Architecture:** Opportunity for architects and designers to create visually striking yet simple structures that blend seamlessly into their surroundings using clean lines and smooth walls. - **Smart Homes:** Opportunity for developers and manufacturers to create homes that utilize technology to optimize efficiency, security and comfort without sacrificing style. - **Sustainable Agriculture:** Opportunity for farmers and agricultural companies to implement eco-friendly farming practices, reduce waste and minimize environmental impact while producing high quality crops and livestock. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Exploring opportunities to use minimalist design principles to create visually stunning and functionally efficient buildings that can be customized to meet clients' individual needs. - **Real Estate:** Creating smart homes that showcase the latest in technology, while offering stylish, energy-efficient, and comfortable living spaces that can be customized to meet individual tastes and preferences. - **Agriculture:** Developing and utilizing innovative practices and technology to maximize productivity, minimize waste, and protect the environment while producing quality crops and livestock. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Slick Monochromatic Retail Boutiques](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tom-ford-boutique.md) - [Rural Charred Modern Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stanfordville-house.md) - [Fort-Inspired Retro Rotundas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fort-137.md) - [Rustic Texan Ranch Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rockin-8-ranch.md) - [Organically Modern Coastal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casona-sforza.md) - [Earthy Off-Grid Textural Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folly-mojave.md) - [Prefabricated Timber Barn Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/north-fork.md) - [Farmhouse-Style Renovated Ranch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pontious-ranch-house-in-dripping-spring.md) - [Blocky Stone Perimeter Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forte-house.md)
