# Interlocking Timber Funnels 'Y' is a Stretching Timber Funnel Built by an International Team By Joey Haar | Published 2017-07-14 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/timber-funnel References: [archdaily](http://www.archdaily.com/875718/y-and-emmi-keskisarja-and-janne-terasvirta-and-company-architects) Nestled into the woods on the grounds of the Seurasaari open air museum in Helsinki, 'Y' is a [massive timber funnel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carbon-garden-pavilion) that will be on display throughout the summer of 2017. The project is the result of a collaboration between the [Finnish National Museum](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pelata-collection) and an international team of architects and carpenters. Though Y is made of timber just like the surrounding buildings of Niemala Tenant Farm, an historic courtyard also on Seurasaari grounds, its clearly a departure from traditional woodworking. The timber funnel is a [complex series of raw pine boards](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-ring) that extend to different lengths depending on their location, giving the structure a pixelated recession throughout its profile. Y is large enough for people to enter it and look through the small viewing window at the transverse end, and indeed guests to the museum are encouraged to do so. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.4/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 33% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Timber Architecture:** Incorporate innovative timber construction in new architecture projects. - **Pixelated Design:** Experiment with pixelated designs in various structures to create unique and visually appealing works. - **Collaborative Art:** Partner with international artists and architects for experimental art installations. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Introduce timber funnel designs in modern building projects. - **Art & Design:** Introduce pixelated designs in other art installations to stand out from the crowd. - **Tourism:** Partner with artists and designers to create interactive installations at tourism destinations. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Self-Shaping Timber Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hybrid-flax-pavilion.md) - [Black Timber Structural Pyramids](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kwaee.md) - [Hidden Garden Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-room-around-a-tree.md) - [Fraying Dynamic Wooden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/match-house.md) - [Timber Research Hubs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anthony-timberlands.md) - [Wooden Arch Design Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-forest-datum.md) - [Artful Elevated Timber Treehouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/secret-camp.md) - [Folk Creature Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fibredog.md) - [Donut-Shaped Meteorological Balloons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woven-gateway-and-sky-ring.md)
