# Next-Generation Connectivity Cables Intel Unveiled 'Thunderbolt 5' for Fast Data and Charging By Colin Smith | Published 2023-09-13 | Business Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thunderbolt-5 References: [intel](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/newsroom/news/intel-introduces-thunderbolt-5-standard.html) [Thunderbolt 5](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cable-matters1) is the latest update to the Thunderbolt specification, a high-speed cable that connects computers to various devices, such as monitors, docks, storage drives, and external GPUs. Thunderbolt 5 promises to deliver up to 120 Gbps of data transfer rate, which is twice as fast as [Thunderbolt 4](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cable-matters) and six times faster than USB 3.2. Thunderbolt 5 also supports up to 240 watts of charging power, which means it can power most gaming laptops without a separate power port. Thunderbolt 5 is based on the USB4 v2 standard, which means it is backward compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt and USB. One of the potential benefits of Thunderbolt 5 is that it could revive the interest in external GPUs, or eGPUs, which are devices that allow users to boost the graphics performance of their laptops by connecting an external graphics card. eGPUs have been around for a while, but they have not gained much popularity due to the arguably high cost, limited compatibility, and bandwidth bottlenecks. With Thunderbolt 5, [Intel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/usb4) claims that eGPUs could support up to 540Hz gaming monitors and offer better performance than internal GPUs.
