# Subtly Grated Storage Systems The Thread Shelf Has a Fine Profile From Side-Long Perspectives By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-11-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/thread-shelf References: [leibal](http://leibal.com/furniture/thread-2/) & [mikiyakobayashi](http://www.mikiyakobayashi.com/furniture/thread/) The Thread Shelf is quite a large piece of furniture, yet it embodies a definite aesthetic lightness, considering its broad dimensions. From the front, the [storage system](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tamo) looks a great deal like the [IKEA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twoinone-billy-model) Expedit Shelf, but visibly much thinner in structure; get a glimpse of it from the side, however, and you'll appreciate its surprisingly delicate design. Up close, you can see that the composition of the bookcase is somewhat lattice-like, consisting of many [slender strips of material](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pli-steel-wall-shelf) that align into horizontal ledges and crisscross with the vertical elements. This grate-like effect makes the Mikiya Kobayashi half as heavy as it would otherwise be, plus the whitewashed Thread Shelf permits the penetration of light from all sides. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.7/10 - Popularity: 38% | Activity: 6% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Lattice-like Storage Systems:** Opportunities for minimalist and lightweight storage systems that incorporate latticed patterns to reduce material usage while maintaining strength. - **Thin-structured Furniture:** Advancements in furniture design to create products with broad dimensions while maintaining a finely detailed and thin structure. - **Penetrable Shelves:** Innovations in the design of shelves that can permit light from all sides, improving visibility and accessibility for the users. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Design:** Creating modern and innovative designs for furniture that incorporate minimalism and efficient use of materials. - **Interior Design:** Development of interior designs and layouts that integrate minimalist furniture and maximize space efficiency. - **Home Decor:** Market opportunities for lightweight and visually penetrable storage systems as home decor that complements modern and contemporary aesthetics. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Modular Decor Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/halblang-blendend.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Modern Convertible Shelving Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blendend.md) - [Discreet Folding Shelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-shelf.md) - [Adaptable Flat-Pack Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-pack-shelving.md) - [Customizable Storage Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelved-modular-furniture.md) - [Modular Bent-Metal Storage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sfso-1.md) - [Speaker-Inspired Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lloyd-tex.md) - [Balanced Freestanding Storage](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ratio-series.md)
