# Concrete Smoking Sanctuaries The Smoking Room by Gianni Botsford is a Place to Enjoy the Garden By Rebecca Byers | Published 2015-02-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-smoking-room References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2015/02/16/gianni-botsford-smoking-pavilion-zurich-switzerland-translucent-concrete/) & [giannibotsford](http://www.giannibotsford.com/project/smoking-pavilion/) The Smoking Room by Gianni Botsford Architects is a clever addition to the [garden of a private residence](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/verdant-house) in Zurich, Switzerland. The room contains a single red folding chair and offers one a chance to enjoy the scenery and partake in their favorite pastime without affecting anyone in the house with secondhand smoke. The Smoking Room was commissioned by British landscape architect Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, who requested [the pavilion be simplistic](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/resting-loop-with-views) in order to allow the newly sculpted garden to live up to its full personality. Gianni Botsford Architects used [translucent concrete](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drifting-stones) to create the structure, a decision described by the design team as a means of making the Smoking Room as alive as the garden that surrounded it. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.0/10 - Popularity: 86% | Activity: 55% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Translucent Concrete:** Exploring the use of translucent concrete in architecture opens up new possibilities for creating immersive and visually stunning spaces. - **Outdoor Living Spaces:** The demand for outdoor living spaces is on the rise, creating opportunities for architects and designers to create innovative structures that seamlessly blend with nature. - **Smoke-free Solutions:** The need for smoke-free solutions is driving the development of dedicated smoking spaces that provide individuals with a comfortable and isolated environment. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Architects can leverage translucent concrete and innovative designs to create visually striking and immersive structures for various purposes. - **Landscaping:** Incorporating smoke-free solutions into landscaping designs can enhance outdoor environments by providing dedicated spaces for individuals to enjoy their hobbies without impacting others. - **Furniture Design:** Designers can explore the creation of versatile and compact furniture pieces, like the red folding chair in The Smoking Room, to cater to the unique needs of specific environments or activities. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Serene Wooden Garden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-pavilion-1.md) - [Hidden Garden Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-room-around-a-tree.md) - [Chequered Garden Tea Rooms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rashid-ali.md) - [Rocky Garden-Nestled Serene Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-3to1-pavilion.md) - [Charred-Wood Tranquil Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/3to1-pavilion.md) - [Cozy Gaden Cabin Retreats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-pavilion.md) - [Simplistic Tranquil Garden Studios](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tuinhuis-atelier.md) - [Contemporary Garden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/garden-pavilion-2.md) - [Retro-Modern Ashtray Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/houseplant-side-table-ashtray.md)
