# Directional Smart Lights The Orb by Shade Gives Consumers Unprecedented Control Over Lighting By Joey Haar | Published 2017-02-15 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-orb-by-shade References: [digitaltrends](http://www.digitaltrends.com/home/the-orb-shade-smart-light/?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds) & [indiegogo](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-orb-danish-designed-intelligent-lighting-light-smart) The Orb by Shade, a Danish tech and design company, is a smart light that offers unprecedented customization when compared to other smart lights currently available on the market. While most smart lights have some degree of app connectivity for controlling aspects like intensity and color, The Orb by Shade includes directionality as well thanks to its [three-tiered design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moodi). The Orb has five LEDs embedded into its three-tiered disc. These tiers each light up completely independently from one another, allowing for direct, indirect, or flood lighting. Shade's app for The Orb comes with [preset lighting modes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ambient-smart-lighting) that are generally popular for various moods and environments (settings for activities like reading or watching movies, for example,) but the app makes it easy to create custom settings or adjust the lights from scratch. The app can also automatically adjust the light settings gradually over the course of the day, eliminating the need to make manual changes. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.3/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 79% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Customizable Smart Lighting:** The Orb by Shade's unprecedented customization options provide an opportunity for disruptive innovation in the smart lighting industry. - **Directional Lighting Control:** The Orb's three-tiered design and independent lighting capabilities open up possibilities for disruptive innovation in the lighting control sector. - **Automated Lighting Adjustments:** The app's ability to automatically adjust light settings throughout the day presents a disruptive innovation opportunity for the home automation industry. ### Who This Affects Most - **Smart Lighting:** The Orb's advanced customization features create disruptive innovation opportunities within the smart lighting industry. - **Lighting Control:** The Orb's directional lighting control capabilities open up possibilities for disruptive innovation within the lighting control sector. - **Home Automation:** The Orb's automated lighting adjustments offer a disruptive innovation opportunity within the home automation industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Organically Shaped Smart Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flourish-table-lamp.md) - [Planetary Dual-Illumination Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbis-lamp.md) - [Removable Head Portable Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lexon-orbe.md) - [Smart Ambient Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ikea-varmblixt-smart-lights.md) - [Calming Orb Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orb-lamp1.md) - [Customizable Hexagonal Desk Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cololight-plus-hexagon-light-kit.md) - [Childhood-Inspired Magnetic Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbe.md) - [Compact Elaborate LED Smart-Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cup-lamp.md) - [3D-Printed Mood Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbyt.md)
