# Halo-Shaped Hydroponic Systems The Green Wheel by DesignLibero Rotates Plants 360 Degrees By Sarah Moore | Published 2012-05-31 | Unique Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-green-wheel-by-designlibero References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/green-wheel-rotating-plants/22728/) & [designlibero](http://www.designlibero.com/portfolio/product-design/the-green-wheel/) The Green Wheel by DesignLibero is a consumer-ready rendition of the spherical garden designed by [NASA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atmospheric) in the 80s to grow multiple plants in a small space. This [spherical planter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/living-sphere) somewhat resembles a hamster wheel with a fixed outer ring surrounding a rotating inner ring that houses a plethora of plants. There are several 'vases' that are built into the inner ring of the system, which hold each plant in place while the structure rotates approximately once per hour. In the mount of the device is a [reservoir of water](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hemisphere) that each plant would pass through as they spin around, and the LED fixture that hangs from the center would provide the plants with the light they need to grow. This spin cycle method of growing foliage is geared toward apartment residents with little space and those looking to save electricity and water. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.6/10 - Popularity: 39% | Activity: 60% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Unique](https://www.trendhunter.com/unique) > [Inventions](https://www.trendhunter.com/inventions) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Hydroponic Gardening:** The rise of hydroponic gardening offers opportunities for businesses to innovate and create more efficient and sustainable ways to grow plants in small spaces. - **Rotating Planters:** Rotating planters offer an innovative solution for apartment residents and those with limited space, creating opportunities for businesses to develop and market space-saving gardening systems. - **Consumer-ready Sustainability:** The popularity of sustainable and environmentally friendly products, like the Green Wheel, provides opportunities for businesses to enter into the market and expand into eco-conscious consumer spaces. ### Where This Applies - **Home Gardening:** The home gardening industry can develop more innovative products and systems to make sustainable gardening more accessible for urban residents and those with limited space. - **Sustainable Design:** Incorporating sustainability into design, as seen in the Green Wheel, is an opportunity for the design industry to create new, eco-friendly product offerings. - **Smart Home:** The integration of smart technology with products such as the Green Wheel offers opportunities for the smart home industry to develop new and innovative ways to create sustainable and efficient living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Self-Sustaining Indoor Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/automated-hydroponic-indoor-garden.md) - [Space-Saving Hydroponic Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/modular-hydroponic-garden-tower.md) - [Mini Mess-Free Garden Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponics-garden.md) - [Automated Indoor Garden Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-hydroponic-garden.md) - [Smart Indoor Hydroponics Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smart-modular-indoor-hydroponics-garden-grow-vegetables-and-herbs-automatic.md) - [Wall-Mounted Hydroponic Gardens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroartpod.md) - [Hydroponics Indoor Garden Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nutraponics.md) - [AI-Powered Autonomous Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gardyn.md) - [Compact Countertop Hydroponic Planters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hydroponic-indoor-garden.md)
