# Scale-Like Amphitheaters This Massive Dome Resembles a Large Lizard Protecting the Stage By Ady Floyd | Published 2015-09-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-chrysalis References: [theverymany](http://theverymany.com) & [urop.uci.edu](http://www.urop.uci.edu/symposium/past_symposia/08/program_abstracts.pdf) New York-based art and architecture studio 'MARC FORNES/THEVERYMANY' created this [monumental amphitheater](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wangun-amphitheatre) titled The Chrysalis. The beautiful structure is comprised of various tiles that resemble reptilian scales. The Chrysalis features archways that slightly resemble an over-sized lizard hovering over the stage that is contained below. The durable structure is sturdy enough to combat the weight equivalent to 25 cars. The entire dome was created as a unique [community gathering site](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape) that will host [live performances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/what-goes-around-bandstand). A second stage was built to entertain children and to host informal performances while a third stage below another arch acts as the site's loading dock. Additionally, this enormous amphitheater can act as shelter for pedestrians, a picnic area or just a place to hang out when there is no music or artistic performances. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 63% | Activity: 65% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Monumental Architecture:** The trend of creating large-scale, visually striking structures that serve as community gathering sites. - **Sustainable Structures:** The trend of building durable, eco-friendly architecture that can withstand heavy weights and serve multiple purposes. - **Multifunctional Spaces:** The trend of designing spaces that can be used for different activities, such as performances, children's entertainment, and recreational purposes. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Architecture:** Opportunities for artists and architects to create innovative, visually captivating structures for community use. - **Entertainment:** Opportunities for event organizers to create unique and memorable live performance spaces. - **Recreation and Leisure:** Opportunities for businesses to design versatile spaces for outdoor activities and relaxation. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Everchanging Water-Based Theaters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/yichang-grand-theatre.md) - [Airborne Concert Halls](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arka-nova.md) - [Reflective Hemispherical Theater Stages](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ball-theater.md) - [Luminous Park Domes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/osmanthus-moon.md) - [Metal-Constructed Yoga Shalas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/metamorphosis-yoga-shala.md) - [Floating Canopy Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/piloti-canopy.md) - [Mass-Timber Lakeside Theaters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/theater-of-the-arts.md) - [Organic Spiral Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasona-natureverse-pavilion.md) - [Code-Generated Pavilion Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-orb.md)
